IBM Laptop

IBM LaptopsOne of the best-known manufacturers, an IBM laptop was one of the first for the home and personal computer market. The company has been around for many years and has the nickname Big Blue due to its distinctive corporate logo and colors which have not changed in years! The IBM laptop and thinkpad still exists today - although it's way more powerful than predecessors.

IBM first came into existence in 1886 as a developer of punch card data processing equipment. The company grew and took on new manufacturing directions such as time-keeping systems, scales and meat slicing machines and by the 1920’s the company had grown to employ around 3000 people. As the company grew and developed into a multinational conglomerate it changed its name and in 1924 it became the International Business Machines Corporation, or IBM, as we know it today. Despite the great depression IBM continued to grow. Even World War II could not stop the company and by 1950 it had a total of approximately 30 thousand employees.

As the age of computers really began to take hold in the 1980’s IBM focused a lot of their research and development into the development in the personal home computer market. On October the 5th 1992 the first IBM ThinkPad was launched and at a hefty price tag of $4350. 1992 would prove to be a big year for IBM not only in its successes but also its failures and the company was nearly crippled when they announced a %8.10 billion loss for the year. IBM however weathered the storm and today it is a leading player in research and development.

One of the company’s biggest successes has been the IBM laptop. When the laptop first came into the marketplace it was considered to be a very unique and niche product that would not really be applicable to general use. This initial pigeon holing of the laptop as a purely military or specialized item proved wrong and it is thought that today there are more laptops in business then the more cumbersome tower computers.

IBM realized very early on that there was potential in the market for commercially available portable computers and as a result they produced the IBM5100 in 1973. The laptops today have come far in comparison to these early beginnings. The IBM ThinkPad is a hugely popular choice for both business and personal computing needs with a wide range of capacities. One of the reasons people choose an IBM laptop over any others is the assurance of quality that the IBM name and logo is associated with. Their proven durability and reliability has kept IBM as a leader in sales as well as an innovator of new designs and new technologies.
